NLSP proudly announces that it has received two grants! See the official press release.
NLSP Helps Prevent Homelessness
The Parkers, a married couple, came to Neigborhood Legal Services Program ("NLSP") seeking help in a predatory lending case. They had been contacted by Big Mortgage Company ("Big Co.") when they became two months behind on their mortgage payments with another lender. Big Co.'s representative told them that they were facing foreclo sure and offered to help them refinance their home, supposedly for a lower payment. Their home is located in an area of the District of Columbia which has seen a rapid rise in property home values, and developers are buying up blocks of housing previously owned by some of the District's poorest residents.
The loan the couple received from Big Co. was no deal; their monthly mortgage payment was actually much higher than their previous payment amount because Big Co. rolled credit card debt and another loan into a new loan.
However, Big Co. failed to perfect their secured interest in the home. Thereafter, the Parkers filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and their debt to Big Co. was discharged. Big Co. filed suit against the couple, seeking to have the court order the couple to sign a new deed. Had this happened, Big Co. could record and foreclose on the property. NLSP entered its appearance in the case and presented equitable defenses. After a trial, the jury found in favor of the Parkers, on all seven of their equitable defenses, and saved their home.

Empower Families
Do you have a Will? NLSP has launched the District's only Free Wills Clinic
Wills are not just for the rich. Regardless of how much or how little money you have, a will ensures that whatever personal belongings and assets you do have will go to family or beneficiaries you designate. Without a will, the court makes these decisions.
If you have children, a will is a must, to ensure that you get to choose your children's guardian. Few people plan to die in the near future, but if you die suddenly without a will, you'll be subjecting your family and loved ones to confusion and anxiety at what is already a difficult time.
Get started planning for your loved ones today!
