Maya SheppardManaging Attorney, Barriers to Employment
Maya Sheppard joined NLSP in September of 2015 as the Breaking Barriers to Employment Project Staff Attorney and is currently the Managing Attorney for the project. She is based in the New York Avenue office.
From 2012-2015, Maya worked as an Assistant Public Defender in Knoxville, Tennessee representing both juvenile and adult clients facing delinquency and criminal cases. Prior to that position she worked as an investigator and mitigation specialist, assisting in the defense of clients facing the death penalty. Throughout law school, Maya volunteered with several community-based legal clinics dealing with both civil and criminal issues. She is committed to providing legal resources and support to economically marginalized communities, and communities disproportionately impacted by the criminal justice system.
Maya holds a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies from Vassar College and a Juris Doctor from the University of Washington School of Law. During law school, she received a University of Washington Dean’s Grant for her public service work.
