Ms. A was living in terrible conditions: every window in her ground floor unit was broken, exposing her to the elements – rain, heat, cold and snow. She lived in constant fear following three burglaries. Terrified that the thieves would strike again, Ms. A placed metal rods and broomsticks on her windowsills. She hoped the flimsy barriers would create enough noise to warn her during another break-in so she could run away before the burglars hurt her. Complaints to her landlord fell on deaf ears and she did not know she had a legal right to safe housing conditions. Instead of responding to her complaints, Ms. A’s landlord started eviction proceedings, and she sought help from NLSP. Ms. A’s NLSP attorney negotiated a settlement that prevented her wrongful eviction and achieved significant improvements to her apartment so that she finally had a safe and healthy home.
