Marc Borbely

Marc Borbely joined NLSP in September 2008 as a Howard C. Westwood Fellow. Marc holds a B.S. in biochemistry from Yale University, and a J.D. from the University of the District of Columbia - David A. Clarke School of Law. He has lived on Capitol Hill since 1999. He is a former high school teacher in the D.C. Public Schools, and in the Oakland Unified School District. He is a former journalist, and is passionate about democracy and education.

He is the recipient of a 2008 Frederick B. Abramson Public Interest Fellowship Award; a 2008 D.C. Jobs With Justice "I'll Be There" Award; a 2008 David A. Clarke School of Law Derrick Bell Book Award; a 2004-2005 David A. Clarke School of Law D.C. Resident Activist Scholarship; and a 2003 D.C. Fifth Police District Citizens Advisory Council's Citizen of the Quarter Award.

Marc is a member of the steering committee of the D.C. Statehood Green Party. He has served on the board of H Street Main Street, on the ACORN School Modernization Oversight Committee, and on the community relations advisory board of the Fairview Halfway House for Women. He was Ward 6 Coordinator for DCPS School Beautification Day in 2005 and 2006. He was founding editor and publisher of The Corner Forum, a participatory neighborhood newsletter on Capitol Hill. He co-founded and led the D.C. School Modernization Campaign in 2006, which helped persuade the D.C. Council to double the capital budget for D.C. Public Schools. He served as an elected Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner from 2005-2006. He is bilingual in German and English, fluent in French, and conversant in Spanish. He is a member of the D.C. bar.
