Janice N. Kona is a Legal Secretary/Intake Worker at Neighborhood Legal Services Program. She first joined NLSP in June of 1979. She conducts initial interviews with applicants to establish their eligibility, identify their legal issues and direct applicants to other resources upon assessment of non –legal problems.

Before joining NLSP, Ms. Kona worked at the US Department of Labor, providing administrative support to the Associate Director, Fiscal Officer and other professional staff under the Longshoremen & Harbor’s Compensation Division. Her duties included typing general correspondence, statistical reports, assistance with auditing of accounts related to payments to claimants receiving workers’ comp., as well as payments to educational and training institutions. She also prepared materials for conferences, meetings, managed daily calendar & scheduled appointments and travel arrangements for Department officials. Ms. Kona attended the University of the District of Columbia and studied sociology.

As a native Washingtonian with family and friends in the most vulnerable and underserved sections of DC (Wards 7 and 8), Ms. Kona is familiar with their needs and concerns and thus, is committed to assisting them by working with an organization such as NLSP to help meet the needs of this community.
