NLSP Launches New Pro Bono Model for Veterans Project

In honor of Memorial Day, NLSP hosted a breakfast at Duane Morris LLP to recognize the tremendous work that pro bono attorneys in the District of Columbia are doing to help low-income veterans obtain disability benefits and discharge upgrades through our Veterans Legal Assistance Project (VLAP).

Tammi Lambert, the Executive Director of Washington DC Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs was our guest speaker and she recognized Duane Morris LLP for the firm's strong commitment to providing pro bono legal assistance to veterans. We were also able to recognize the work of our former colleague Adrian Gottshall on a recent case for homeless veterans and the law firm of Latham and Watkins for a recent white paper they did on how the VA wrongfully treats veterans with less than honorable discharges.

NLSP also announced the launch of a new pro bono model for the VLAP. Because veterans cases often take several years from start to finish, NLSP will begin holding structured clinics where attorney and paralegal volunteers from law firms can assist veteran clients and review veterans' cases in a four hour shift. We are excited to be able to offer this opportunity to have more attorneys and firms involved in the VLAP. For more details see our VLAP pro bono page or contact Pro Bono Counsel Heather Hodges at 202.269.5115.
