Verizon Domestic Violence Workshops

This winter, thanks to a grant from the Verizon Foundation, the NLSP Family Law team developed a successful series of domestic violence workshops for vulnerable teens and adults.

Each workshop addressed a different aspect of domestic violence. The first provided an overview of what domestic violence is and how to recognize it, the scope of power and control exercised by an abusive partner, and the cycle of violence. The second provided an overview of the Civil Protection Order process in DC, safety planning, and local resources. The third focused on how to build healthy relationships, how to recognize unhealthy relationships, and effective methods of co-parenting.

NLSP presented 14 workshops with Bright Beginnings, Covenant House, and East River Family Strengthening Collaborative. NLSP attorneys tailored each series to the interests and needs of the participants served by that organization, such as homeless youth and families. Teen participants were encouraged to become advocates and educate others in their community about domestic violence. Both men and women attended the sessions.

Workshop participants appreciated and learned from the workshops: “The best part of the workshop was being able to determine the difference between what is domestic violence and what is just everyday situations,” one attendee said. Another stated that she would attend another workshop on domestic violence “to keep the knowledge fresh in my mind so I will know the DV signs.”

Several community organizations have expressed interest in hosting future workshops. If you or your organization are interested in learning more about these workshops, please contact Keeshea Turner Roberts at kroberts@nlsp.org.
