Tomás RiveraStaff Attorney, Family Law and Brief Services Unit
Joining NLSP May 2023, Tomás serves on the Family Law and Brief Services Unit. Previously, he was Family Law Program Specialist with the DC Bar Pro Bono Center, supporting the Family Law Assistance Network and quarterly Immigration Legal Advice and Referral Clinic.
During the pandemic, he connected tenants facing wrongful eviction to legal help with San Antonio Legal Services Association. His time with St. Mary’s University School of Law’s Identification Recovery Program spanned all three years and is the formative experience of his career. Immigration Clinic sparked his interest in litigation and trial advocacy. He received several awards for his dedication to pro bono and public interest work, including the AT& T Excellence in Pro Bono, Dean Charles Cantù Spirit of Service Award, St. Mary’s University School of Law’s Litigation and Advocacy Award, and membership to the State Bar of Texas Pro Bono College.
Tomás earned his J.D. with a Pro Bono and Public Service Certificate from St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas. Prior to law school, he worked at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. He earned his M.A. in Art Business, graduating with Distinction, from Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London, focusing on legal and ethical issues in the global art market. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, with a B.A. in Art History, B.A. in Italian Language and Literature, and Certificate of European Studies. He is a fifth generation Texan, first generation college student, and the first lawyer in his family. Tomás and his husband Clay moved to DC in 2022 and love it here.
