Sheryl L. Kay

Sheryl L. Kay is a Staff Attorney with the Family Law Unit at NLSP. She has always been passionate about lifting up those in need. Ms. Kay’s past work experience includes fighting for the people of Miami, Florida as an Assistant Public Defender and advocating through Special Education due process hearings for DC families with disabled children.

As a teenaged mother, she brought her daughter with her to college and graduated in the top 5% of her class from Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. Ms. Kay also excelled academically in law school at the American University’s Washington College of Law. She was the President of the Women’s Law Association and practiced in federal court as a student attorney in the law school’s International Human Right Law Clinic. While in law school, Ms. Kay spent two years studying Peace & Conflict Resolution in International Affairs at American University’s School of International Service. She proudly graduated with honors from both college and law school.

As the mother of two daughters and grandmother to one little girl, Ms. Kay knows that family preservation and unity is of paramount
importance. Accordingly, she stands up for DC families as if they were her own. As a member of NLSP’s Family Law Unit, Ms. Kay zealously represents people in domestic violence cases and in matters related to child custody or divorce.

When she is not working, Ms. Kay enjoys spending time with her family and cats; reading books with her hometown book club; and
listening to music, especially when it’s live.
