Joe McLean

 Joe McLean is a staff attorney in the Housing and Economic Security Units, where he works to ensure stability and security for people in poverty who call D.C. home.

Before joining NLSP in 2023, Joe worked in consumer protection for the North Carolina Department of Justice. He was previously a staff attorney for the National Health Law Program, where he litigated state and federal cases to protect Medicaid access for people in poverty.

During law school, he served in internships and clinics dealing with a variety of issues, including tenants’ rights, criminal record sealing, public assistance, civil rights, consumer issues, and homelessness. He also was a volunteer and organizer for Juvenile Hall Outreach, where he met with incarcerated youth to talk about their rights and about opportunities for education and employment.

A native Tar Heel, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in journalism and wrote for the student newspaper. He received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, after which he clerked for the Honorable Catherine C. Eagles, U.S. District Judge, in Greensboro, North Carolina.
